Lightning asks his girl to marry him. Meanwhile one of the POWs who escaped meets the Airmen in their mess hall to give them Ray Gun's tags, and to say that Ray was the best soldier he ever met. Easy owns up to the Colonel that he shouldn't have let Ray fly, but the Colonel puts him straight.
The Major gathers the men to tell them of their new mission - they'll be the first escort for a huge bombing raid striking deep into Germany ... where they'll be up against Jet fighters.
Up in the skies their relief doesn't arrive, so the men choose to keep flying and escort the bombers to Berlin.
The yellow-tail planes of the Germans are soon on the scene, led by the creepy leader. Vince from Friday Night Lights is the first to be gunned down.
the emn are struggling against the speed of the jet fighters. Lightning and Easy come up with a way to take them on by gaining altitude then soaring straight down to match their speed. The Germans are soon decimated, but the enemy commander wants a final showdown.
He is gaining on Easy, peppering him with shots. Lightning swings around, and plays chicken with them both, they trade machine gun fire. The German's plane explodes, but Lightning has taken multiple shots and is soon coughing blood.
Easy tries to coast him back to base, but Lightning drifts away and his plane crashes down to the ground, exploding in flames.
Back at base, Easy gives up the bottle, and goes to tell Lightning's fiance the bad news.
The Colonel gathers the men to offer their condolences for fallen comrades. To break the bad mood Ray shows up.
As it ends, the men are awarded for their bravery and gain the rightful recognition of the American army. We're told that the Red Tails had one of the best records of any fighter group in WW2, including 96 Distinguished Flying Crosses. 66 Tuskegee Airmen were killed in action.
